A Moment of Printmaking
Written by Connor Albrightson
Every year, the Paseo Arts Association hosts Print on Paseo, an annual juried exhibition exclusive to the medium of printmaking and one of five juried shows that are part of the PAA’s annual programming. The show represents the diversity of printmakers and educates the public about the many different printmaking processes. This year’s show features over 30 prints juried by Marika Arellano Christofides.
The Bridge, Anthony Corraro
One of the artists featured in this show is Anthony Corraro, an artist who grew up in Tulsa, studied at Wichita State University and now resides in Lawrence, Kansas. Corraro has shifted the standards for printmaking with his unique process of creating intricate screenprints with hand-dyed dust. The dust for Corraro’s prints comes from sweeping his studio, to which he colors with the use of screen-printing ink. After pulverizing the colored dust into a fine paste, Corraro will then push the dust through his silkscreen as if it were any other ink.
Corraro states that the inspiration for his process was inspired by Buddhism, namely the sand mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism, which are also created with a similar process. Corraro is heavily inspired by the Buddhist mindset. He states that his process of collecting dust is synonymous with meditation, in the sense that sweeping and by extension, cleaning, is a therapeutic mechanism for most people.
A Moment, Anthony Corraro
The two prints that Corraro will be featuring are entitled Bridge and A Moment (Best of Show Award). Both pieces are from his series: Metamorphic Apertures. Inspired by the improvised photographs sourced from his walks throughout nature, this series examines transitional states within the natural world as reflections of our own ever-changing perceptions. He states that his process of using the dust in this series “embodies the concept of how our perceptions undergo a similar transformation, as well as the susceptibility of these perceptions to change within an active environment.”
We want to invite everyone to see Corraro’s work in this year’s Print on Paseo. The exhibit will be held in Gallery II of the Paseo Arts & Creativity Center, 3024 Paseo, July 4-26.
