“Hold On, Magnolia” is a painting about memory and the ability for art to hold it. My niece, at 3 years old, runs through thick grass towards an ambiguous horizon, frozen in this form for as long as this painting continues to exist. In reality, the seasons have changed. The warmth is gone, the grass is brown, and my niece is all the time older. But here and now, forever preserved in brushmarks of oil paint, she’ll stay that little girl in early summer with everything ahead of her."
