Echoes in Nature by David Gipson

  • Paseo Arts Association 3024 Paseo Oklahoma City, OK, 73103 United States (map)

David Gipson is a local artist and owner of Gipson Design + Build Company in Oklahoma City. A native Oklahoman and a graduate from Oklahoma City University with a bachelor’s degree in art, he studied with artists Brunel Ferris and Cheryl Cozad of OCU during his time at the university. Gipson has been a practicing artist for over 30 years, exhibiting in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Dallas.

“My art explores the connection between people and nature. I use different materials to create paintings that capture moments of change, like memories that feel close but just out of reach. I paint natural shapes—bird nests, trees, and the human body—that feel both familiar and fleeting, solid yet free.

Soft layers of color blend and fade, shifting between clear and blurry, using shades of purple, blue, aqua, peach, and earthy tones and pulling the viewer in, showing small details up close while also creating a vast, open feeling. The scale of these works further amplifies their evocative nature. The canvases immerse the viewer, emphasizing both the intricacy and grandeur of natural forms. The size invites an intimate experience—drawing the eye into the fine details of nests, branches, and figures while simultaneously conveying a vast, atmospheric presence. This close-up perspective of organic phenomena transforms the familiar into something deeply felt.

I work with wax, oil paint, watercolor, and charcoal to create texture and depth. My art moves between real and abstract, with shapes appearing and disappearing, just like thoughts and memories.

My paintings mix realistic and abstract art. I suggest images of nature, people, and dreamlike scenes using bold colors, patterns, and shapes. My work invites the viewer into a world that is both beautiful and mysterious, where some things are clear and others feel just out of reach. At this point in my life, I embrace openness, sharing my experiences so others can find their own meaning in them.”
