“Growing up in Southern California and with a Mexican mother, I was enriched in Mexican culture, which seemed to fade as I moved to Oklahoma. I wanted to make a piece that was close to home, and one day while looking through my closet, I found two papier-mache calaveras made by a family friend, Alice Marie. I decided to make these on a grander scale with tutorials I found on YouTube, and then used one of my friends and her husband to model the mask around multiple areas in OKC.”
